Album Review: Svelt St.'s 'Hello, Dear'
Svelt St, a dynamic combination of vocalist Feelmore and emcee Bang! Cheeto (who happen to be married), hit me up with their debut album, ‘Hello, Dear’. It is really hard to characterize this album, since it pulls in so many different influences. To me, their album is an experiment in what they can do with music, and how many different genres they can cover (spanning from hard trip-hop to soft vocal and piano driven songs).
The album opens with Lights On, a driven synth-based track, which still features both Feelmore’s and Cheeto’s vocals, crafting one of the best songs on the album. However, the next song drops it down a few levels to the vocal driven ‘Black Wall’. Black Wall is where I fell in love with Feelmore’s voice. Absolute love. Her dark sultry vocals drive Black Wall, and really define the album for me. They are heavily featured throughout, and do great things for the ears.
‘St. George’ is the next track to really grab me, a raunchy sex-romp hidden in a quite downtempo song. The lyrics and the beat send very different messages, but that’s cool, because it makes the song really interesting. ‘Po’ Boy’, the first single off the album, is a rap song with vocals as the base of the beat. Think A Millie, just instead of someone yelling and Wayne rapping about being rich, think soft vocals and singing and rapping about a lonely kid. Definitely a high point of the album.
From here on, the album turns towards rock, moving away from the synth and drumkit driven first half of the album. They do just as well with the rock as they did with the trip-hop, but what really showcases their talent are the upbeat songs, such as ‘Promises’ (which is ended far too early). However, its still an awesome journey into some funk-guitar based sultry vocals.
Overall, as the album progresses it digresses into so many different genres its hard to keep track of. The songs are great when taken alone, but the album lacks overall cohesion. That is not to say I don't like it, (its been on repeat for the last week or so), but that it definitely has some room for improvement. However, judging from the talent inherent in the songs, I expect big things from these guys sometime in the near future.
Their album was just released, so hurry and grab a copy from their myspace!

MILKMAN
Milkman is a Cali based mashup DJ (a la Gregg Gillis) who put out an album Jan 2k8 that is incredible. As an avowed Girl Talk sucks guy, i was pretty skeptical when introduced to Milkman. However, his sick sampling got to me, and i have since listened to his (FREE) album on repeat for about 2 weeks. Sorta absurd. I highly recommend that you grab it.

Death to the Throne!
No, im not proposing some sort of revolution. Im introducing Pheonix based Death to the Throne, who shot me a realllly sweet remix of Chromeo's Fancy Footwork. It keeps a lot of my favorite elements of the song, but drives it harder by putting the repeater on some notes, and just generally making it feel like it should only be listened to in a dark room with tons of dancing bodies.

Svelt St
Svelt St. just sent me a promo track, which is absolutely fantastic. First, a bit about Svelt St: they are married couple vocalist Feelmore and emcee Bang! Cheeto. They pull in quite a few different influences, from hip hop to electronic to just pure vocalizations. They're also putting out an album next month, which should be ill.
Svelt St's "Po' Boy" is one of those tracks that just keeps getting better and better every time you listen to it. Its been on my repeater for the last few days. Its got some pretty sweet vocalizations that make up half of the beat, along with some hip-hop electro influenced beatmaking. Check it

LexiconDon
LexiconDon just hit me up with some sweet new (exclusive!) tracks for your ears.
"LexiconDon is Alex Koons from Seattle, WA, transplanted to LA. He comes from a hip-hop background, but his recent transformation into synth pop hookmaster was too much for us to ignore. He got to LA and just flipped his whole style up. He's got plenty of that LA swagger, but his voice is straight Cure. It's pretty hard to keep these songs out of your head. Binary artists Fabian and On Off On are behind the production on his songs."
Right on, his synthwork is pretty spectacular, highly recommended.

DMCA Needs to Die
This would be the 100th post, except for all of the stupid DMCA takedowns. This is getting ridiculous. When I write something and put up music with the express email consent of an artist, what right does Blogger have to decide that its not legal? I mean its fine if an artist or promoter emailed me and asked me to take something down, sure i understand that. But when someone just decides that the content i work on must be illegal because it has a zshare link? That is absolutely absurd, and probably illegal. Im sure theres someone i could be suing if i was a billionare who wanted to take on googles legal team in the courts. But im not.
Im sorry to anyone who has been trying to find a post of mine that gets taken down, i promise its not on purpose.
PS, any other bloggers been having this issue a lot recently?

Psychic Attack of the Psyduck
This is the solo project of Eric August, called Psychic Attack of the Psyduck. Great name? Hell yes. Great sound? Hell yes. He blends in a lot of sample based music to make a mix of triphop, electro, downbeat, and yes, a bit of psychedelia. It all comes together in his new album, 'Secret Hiding Places', which is available for free download here. If your really digging his stuff, his first album is also up for free on his myspace (link above).

Chromeo in Montreal
I saw Chromeo/Calvin Harris last weekend, and it was absolutely amazing. I only shuffled up enough photos to review Chromeo, but thats ok cuz they were the stars of the show.
Montreal’s L’Olympia Theater was packed. Several hundred people were milling around after Jamie Lidell’s set and before Chromeo came on. People started cheering as soon as the roadies brought out the famous neon legs. As the lights finally dimmed, a faint ‘Chrom-eo Oooooh’ could be heard. Like a magic signal, everyone rushed the stage, just in time for Dave1 and P-Thugg to saunter out to the adoring looks of their fans.
Dave 1 and P-Thugg (or David Macklovitch and Patrick Gemayel) are the real deal. They are a skinny supercool nerd (Dave1 is after his Columbia PhD in French Lit), and a thug complete with gold chains and the leather cap (who happens to be an accountant). They are self-described as "the only successful Arab/Jewish collaboration since the beginning of time." And successful they are.
They blasted into their set with tons of energy, with their first song “Tenderoni” getting everyone dancing. They managed to keep this happy dancing all the way through their set, complete with callouts to the crowd, asking them to sing along, telling them that they were rocking, and thanking them for their extremely apparent love. The strobe lights backing them made it impossible not to get caught up in the dancing fever that gripped the crowd.
As the set wound down with their first single “So Gangsta,” no one was ready to leave. They came out to the incredibly loud calls of “Oo ee Oh, Chromeo” to play their final song: “100%” After throwing the remainder of their drumsticks off into the crowd, they walked off with hundreds of people still yelling “Oo ee Oh” and dancing to the house DJ who slowly faded in, as if he was scared to try to match the glory of Chromeo’s crowd pleasing show.
It was fantastic, and i hope all of you go and see Chromeo the next time you possibly can.

New Justice Remix, Intro to Datsu
Its been a while since a decent Justice remix has come out. There have been literally millions of them (especially for D.A.N.C.E), so ive sorta been phasing them out. However, when this came across my lap, i had to put it up for ya.
Datsu is a Lyon based unsigned electro musician. From what ive heard, hes really keen on the heavy thumping basslines, and messes around with the vocals quite a bit. Hes turned quite a few songs into dance monsters, but my fav by far is his mix of 'Genesis'.
Genesis is by itself one of my fav songs ever, its just a beautifully dark creation of genius. However, he takes that dark dance power and somehow makes it upbeat. It turns from a grungy anthem into an upbeat glitchdance phenomenon. Very enjoyable.

Ratatat vs The Knife
Two amazing artists, one amazing track. Ratatat takes on The Knife's 'We Share Our Mother's Health'. It features Ratatat's typical distorted guitar work, in their newer style (LP3 as opposed to their Mixtapes). It fits really well with the The Knife's vocals, and is just basically a good listen. Check it.

Her Space Holiday
First show on WRMC was last night, 930-1030 EST. It went pretty well. Ill try to put together a post with links to all or most of the songs later, but dont really have time now.
I do, however, have time to tell you to pick up the 'Sleepy Tigers EP' by Her Space Holiday. It is pretty indie rock, a little different from the normal electro i post. However, i simply fell in love when listening to it. So, here is the first song (and first single off of the upcoming album 'XOXO Panda, and the New Kid Revival.')
